NCRI - U.S. Congressman Ed Royce (R-CA), Chairman of the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, on Thursday addressed the threats posed by the mullahs' regime in Iran during a strategic conversation on U.S. foreign policy at the Stimson Center.

Rep. Royce took part in the forum event with Ambassador Lincoln P. Bloomfield Jr., a former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Political Military Affairs and current Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Stimson Center.

Rep. Royce said that the people of Iran are being “disenfranchised” by the mullahs’ regime.

He rejected the outcome of the regime’s sham Parliamentary and Assembly of Experts elections in February, pointing out that candidates that were not loyal enough to the regime’s Supreme Leader Militarywere automatically disqualified.

"The election was in fact between the hardliners in Iran and the very hardliners in Iran. At the end of the day every one of those candidates was picked by the ayatollah," he said.

U.S. policy towards the Iranian regime has not succeeded in changing Khamenei’s attitude, he said.

“If we look at the number of people put to death and the political prisoners in Iran last year, it was much higher than the year before. It is a number which is going up.”

Former US Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy has written in the Thursday edition of the Providence Journal about how Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is not at all “moderate”, despite Western perception, and that such a gap between perception and reality has existed for “more than three decades.”

“Countless instances since the 2013 election of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani—including most recently the state-sanctioned torching of the Saudi embassy in Tehran — should have dispelled the notion that we are dealing with a moderate reformist at the helm of the Islamic Republic,” Mr Kennedy writes. “Sectarian conflict is on the rise with Iran backing Syria’s Assad, Hezbollah, an anti-American insurgency in Yemen and radical Shia factions in Iraq.”

The former Congressman noted how these developments “have proven the accuracy of analyses from sources like the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), which insisted from the start that moderation was not a realistic prospect under the existing theocratic regime.”

“Indeed, the illusion of a “moderate” Iranian president has persisted for more than three decades, despite its nonexistence in reality. Rouhani is only the latest to artfully exploit this fantasy and play into a naïve, aspirational worldview among many in the West about Tehran's behavior and intentions.”

The international community ought to hold the mullahs' regime in Iran accountable for “crimes against humanity,” United States Congressman Ted Poe has said.

"It is important that we in the United States and the world understand that Iran is the number one state sponsor of terrorism in the world and they have their tentacles of mischief and murder throughout the world, not just in the Middle East," said Rep. Poe, a Republican lawmaker and former judge from Texas.

He added that Iran's regime had "gotten away with many of the crimes that they have committed over the last 20 years."

"The world community, especially the United States, needs to hold the current government of Iran accountable for the murder of not just its own citizens, but the murder of people throughout the world of all religious faiths."

"As the Chairman of the Terrorism Sub-committee of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives, I will continue to call out the Iranian government for its crimes against humanity," Congressman Poe added.

Representative Brad Sherman (D-CA) has come out strongly against the 

Iran deal, warning that the Iran deal means “terrorism with impunity.”

My goal is to make sure all Americans know this is not morally or legally binding on the U.S. and the world, because I see how ugly this deal is in the next decade,” Sherman said in an interview with Breitbart News.

“Everything Iran is doing has a legitimate cover,” Sherman warned. “In international affairs, everybody lies some of the time, and Iran lies much more often.”

Sherman addressed his heated exchange with Secretary of State John Kerry during last week’s hearing before the House Foreign Affairs Committee where Kerry refused to answer whether he would follow the law and commit to congressionally-imposed sanctions should Congress garner enough votes to override President Obama’s veto.
