The health of an Iranian political prisoner on indefinite hunger strike is in grave danger.
Jafar Azimzadeh, imprisoned at the notorious Evin Prison in Tehran, is on Day 26 of his hunger strike protesting Tehran’s crackdown on union activity.
On Saturday, he was taken to hospital complaining of kidney pain but refused to have liquid serum administered and was transferred back to the prison, still in pain.
His wife reports that in addition to his kidney problems, Mr. Azimzadeh has lost a considerable of weight, his blood pressure has dropped and he is having vision problems.
The Tehran bus drivers’ union, the Syndicate of Workers of Tehran and Suburbs Bus Company (Sherkat-e Vahed) called for Mr. Azimzadeh’s release from prison and warned the public that his health had been greatly affected by his strike.
Mr. Azimzadeh, a workers’ rights activist, is being heavily pressured by the regime to end his strike. As previously reported on Stop Fundamentalism, Tehran’s prosecutor's office demanded that he stop the hunger strike after he was unable to walk from his cell on Ward 8 to the visitor’s hall to see his wife, on May 17.
They even offered him the chance to take long-term leave from prison, not out of concern for his health but because they are scared of him becoming a ‘martyr’.

Iran political prisoner denounces demagoguery in Christmas message

Ali Moezzi, an Iranian political prisoner in Tehran's notorious Evin Prison,
Ali Moezzi, an Iranian political prisoner in Tehran's notorious Evin Prison,
Ali Moezzi, an Iranian political prisoner in Tehran's notorious Evin Prison, has sent a message on the occasion of Christmas, denouncing the Iranian mullahs’ reactionary interpretation of religion.
Two of Mr. Moezzi daughters are members of the main Iranian opposition group People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) in Camp Liberty, Iraq. Mr. Moezzi is held in Ward 8 of the dreaded Evin Prison.
His message reads in part: “Greetings to my Christian and Muslim compatriots on the occasion of the birth of Jesus Christ. The birth of Christ which coincided this year with the birth of Islam’s Prophet Mohammad is a cause for double celebration. These prophets were harbingers of mercy and emancipation and equality and unity. Being reactionary is incompatible with the path of the prophets who are the pioneers of historical progress. The mullahs ruling Iran and Salafist and blood thirsty fundamentalists do not know Christ or Mohammad or Abraham. They foster despicable and ugly qualities in people and promote demagoguery. In anticipation of these festive days, we ask God to eradicate this scourge of the era and help us to establish friendship, co-existence, peace and cooperation between human societies."
Mr. Moezzi who suffers greatly due to obstruction of the intestines was prevented last month by the regime’s henchmen from being transferred to hospital. Following protests by political prisoners in Evin, he was taken to the prison infirmary, but was returned to the ward shortly afterwards without receiving any treatment.
Mr. Moezzi who is a political prisoner of the 1980s suffers from various diseases, including cancer and acute kidney disease, due to years of torture and imprisonment in the Iranian regime’s dungeons. Nonetheless, along with a number of other political prisoners, he staged a hunger strike last month to protest the suppression and the arrest of families of political prisoners and their supporters.

IRAN - Forozan Abdipour, member of Iran national volleyball team

Forozan Abdipour, member of Iran national volleyball team
Forozan Abdipour, member of Iran national volleyball team
to all volleyball fans: In memory of Forozan Abdipour, member of national volleyball  team who was executed in 1988 by the Iranian regime
Ms. Abdi was born in Tehran in 1957. She was the captain of the National Volleyball team and a sympathizer of the PMOI. According to her cellmate, Ms. Abdi was very popular among other inmates.
Her cellmates remember her for her open-mindedness and tolerant attitude towards other political prisoners. In one instance, her cellmate recalls, when a repenting prisoner who was in charge of the cell ordered another prisoner to separate her dishes from the others (because prison authorities treated prisoners who did not believe in God as “unclean”), Ms. Abdi had intervened and stressed that “no one considers the prisoner as ‘unclean’ and whoever does, should separate her own dishes from others”. Ms. Abdi had also kept her athletic spirits during her years of imprisonment and organized volleyball games during the short period when female prisoners had access to a volleyball court at Qezelhesar prison.
Arrest and detention
She was arrested in 1981.
One of her cellmates saying: "I saw her in section 8 of Qezelhesar in 1982. It was a section for special punishment and sometimes there were 25 to 30 people in a cell [that was meant to fit 3]... They placed Foruzan and some others in a restroom in early 1983. The place was so dirty that all of them contracted skin diseases. Then, they were transferred to solitary confinement at both Gohardasht and Qezelhesar prisons where they stayed until early 1986."
Ms. Abdi was protesting against the inhuman rules and behaviour of prison guards. As a result, for almost a year and half (fall 1983 - winter 1984), she was held in solitary confinement and was deprived from recreation time outside, from having contacts with others, reading newspapers, and having regular visits from her family.
Sometime in 1986, Ms. Abdi was transferred from Gohardasht to Evin prison where she was detained until her execution. During this period, she also spent most of her imprisonment in the closed section of the ward that prison authorities used for punishing prisoners. Those held in this section were held in closed cells and were allowed to leave their cells 3 times a day (for 30 minutes), during which time they could use the bathroom, wash their dishes and their clothes.
Forozan Abdipour was executed along with 30 000 other prisoners, mostly PMOI, when the Iranian regime carried out the massacre of political prisoners in the summer of 1988.
Today, women are fighting to enter volleyball stadiums to watch games. Forozan Abdipour, member of national volleyball volleyball team was executed in 1988 by the Iranian regime for wanted all women to live in freedom and democracy.

IRAN: Prominent dissident publicly slams regime in Tehran at PMOI (MEK) supporter funeral

Dr-Maleki
Dr-Maleki
On Thursday, December 3, 2015, Ms. Mehri Jannatpour, a long-time supporter of the Iranian opposition group the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI) [Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK)], passed away in Iran. She actively supported the MEK for over four decades, enduring prison terms at Evin prison on three occasions after the 1979 revolution for her political views. Although she underwent brutal torture by the clerical regime, she continued to support the organization, and never submitted to the regime's pressures. Two of her children are with the MEK, one of them at Camp Liberty, Iraq.
A funeral service was held for Mrs. Jannatpour on Saturday December 5 in Tehran. Dr. Mohammad Maleki, the first post-revolution Chancellor of Tehran University, spoke at the event and praised the late Mrs. Jannatpour for her support of the MEK.
Below are excerpts of Dr. Maleki's remarks:
... What can I say about this women, a human being who lived her life like Zeynab [sister of Shiite Imam Hussein, who died in 680 AD]. She lived like Zeynab, and brought up her children and made them productive members of society. But she did not only have her own children, she also had children among those across the border [at Camp Liberty in Iraq], who face missile attacks, and experience thousands of challenges and problems. But, they are persevering and are as solid as a mountain. They are this mother's children. How fortunate she was!
There are many who come into this world, "enjoy" life and die. But the fulfillment experienced by such mothers is different.
Mother, what can I say about your compassion, your words when you could still speak, your knowledge, your talents, your wisdom and mind which was productive until the last second.
I can only say that there are now many who have been orphaned after your death. They say that people are orphaned when their mothers die. We are now truly orphans.
You lived like Zeynab. You lived like her and were among the Zeynabs of the world. Agents [of the regime] should record my voice and my words. Yes, I am declaring loudly that you lived like Zeynab and you were a Zeynab of your time. There were thousands like you, like Mother Dashti, who passed away a few days ago. She went to Heaven to make it ready for you.
On behalf of the family of the deceased, I want to thank all of you who have gathered here despite all the challenges to attend the funeral of this Zeynab of our time. Last night, too, I said at Mother Dashti's funeral that you should not worry. Despite all its problems, corruption and the ruling regime that breeds corruption, our society continues to give birth to many Zeynabs and Husseins.
There continue to be Zeynabs and Husseins. For over 50 years, both the Shah and the clerical regime tried to end this lineage [MEK]. But how can they succeed?
I am reminded of a quote by the late Grand Ayatollah Montazeri who wrote to Khomeini in a letter that rest assured, an idea cannot be killed through murder. You have killed so many, you have beaten so many, you have destroyed so many.
[Reciting a song by the MEK]: "You fired bullets, wielded axes, and targeted defenseless bodies." When you got nothing out of all this, you fired 80 missiles [at Camp Liberty on October 29, 2015] thinking that you can destroy it all. But be sure that just a few short months from now Camp Liberty will become even more beautiful, better and more gorgeous than it has ever been. This will be so as long as there are people who care for their people, and as long as they are people who say "seek freedom from cradle to grave." They remove the word "knowledge" [from the original Persian expression] and replace it with "freedom," because knowledge without freedom is not knowledge.
At a university that there are many so-called professors and scientists, they pay no attention to the disgraceful and depressing state of society, no word is said about theft and corruption, only silence. Yes, in this society, we must once again cry out:
"Seek freedom from cradle to grave."
Because without freedom in society, there can only be what you are witnessing now: theft, corruption, and prostitution.
And, Imam Hussein and Zeynab dedicated everything they had for freedom, and declared that they will "never surrender."
And we now see that Husseins and Zeynabs stand proud throughout history.
I once again thank you all on behalf of the family, and I ask you to please make your way toward the location of the ceremony.
